The course and results of top-level talks between Tajikistan and Pakistan

Discussion of issues related to the further development of friendly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in a narrow format first took place at the meeting of President Emomali Rahmon and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, and then continued on the top level talks in expanded format.

At the beginning of the conversation Muhammad Nawaz Sharif said: "We are sincerely looking forward to your visit. You may consider Pakistan as your second home, just as we consider Tajikistan as our second home. Your visit is another opportunity to strengthen and expand friendly relations and cooperation. "

Emomali Rahmon, in his turn, expressed satisfaction with the warm reception and hospitality of the Pakistani side, and said: "The expansion of multifaceted cooperation and strengthening of mutually beneficial relations with Pakistan is one of the main directions of foreign policy of the Republic of Tajikistan, and for our country, trade and economic opportunities of Pakistan, its geostrategic position and influence in South Asia and the Islamic world is important. »

A useful exchange of views on development of cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, investment, trade, energy, defense, security, and science, technology and culture took place during the official talks.

It was emphasized that to date more than 40 bilateral agreements in various fields were signed in 23 years of diplomatic relations.

It has been ascertained with pleasure that the trade turnover between Tajikistan and Pakistan has steadily raised from 18 mln US dollars in 1998 to 89 million dollars in 2014.

It was emphasized that the development of cooperation in the energy sector is a key subject of economic relations of Tajikistan and Pakistan.

Due to a shortage of electricity in Pakistan,Nawaz Sharif paid special attention to speeding up work on the construction of the power line CASA-1000.

According to bilateral decision the direct air service between Tajikistan and the Pakistani cities of Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and Faysaladab and Qweyti should be opened in the near future.

According to M.N.Sharif, "Pakistan is ready to become the gateway of Tajikistan to the southern sea routes."

The construction of railways and roads, part of the Pakistani side in the implementation of energy projects, the construction of hydroelectric power plants, transmission lines, the financing of small and medium-sized industrial projects on the territory of Tajikistan, restoration of direct flights between the two countries has been named among the priority areas of cooperation.

The interlocutors, calling terrorism and extremism a serious threat to each other’s safety, confirmed a serious willingness to strengthen cooperation in this area. In this regard, Tajikistan and Pakistan will seek to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan, including through the implementation of socio-economic projects.

Eight new documents strengthening the legal framework of cooperation between Tajikistan and Pakistan were signed based on the results of official meetings and negotiations.

Joint statement on the course of the results of the state visit of President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was signed by President Emomali Rahmon and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

In addition, following documents were signed:

-Memorandum on cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan;

-Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on extradition;

-Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on cooperation in the energy sector;

-Memorandum on expanding cooperation in the field of industry between the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan;

-Agreement on the establishment of a Joint Business Council between the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Federation of Chamber of Commerce of Pakistan;

-The Program of cooperation between the Tajik Academy of Sciences and Research Council on Science and Industry of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan;

-The Program of scientific cooperation between the Institute of Geology, Earthquake Engineering and Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Museum of Natural History of Pakistan.

During the press conference, the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif expressed their satisfaction about the course and results of meetings and negotiations, once again stressed the interest of the two friendly countries in the further expansion of mutually beneficial relations.

The Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif described the relations between the two countries promising, in particular, he said that "Pakistan is extremely interested in the expansion of multifaceted mutually beneficial relations with Tajikistan."

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, in particular, said: "Both sides agreed that a broad and comprehensive and constructive cooperation between the two countries fully meets long-term interests of our peoples and promotes regional cooperation, peace and stability in the region."
