Meeting with members of the European Parliament

The Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon met with members of the European Parliamentary (EU) delegation led by Fulvio Martusciello. The meeting took place in the Palace of the Nation.

The discussion focused on pressing issues regarding Tajik – EP bilateral ties and boosting Tajik – EU inter-parliamentary cooperation.

President Emomali Rahmon called the EU as one of Tajikistan’s important partners in the international arena and expressed his satisfaction over the current status of bilateral comprehensive relationship.

The parties noted that political, trade, economic, security, social, humanitarian, cultural sectors are among priority areas of bilateral cooperation. The role of regular activities of the EU-Tajikistan Cooperation Council, EU-Tajikistan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee and the newly established EU – Tajikistan Subcommittee on Development Cooperation as well as EU – Tajikistan Political, Security and Human Rights Dialogues was considerably evaluated.

It was emphasized that Tajikistan is interested in further developing relationships with the European Parliament toward strengthening parliamentarism, the rule of law, humanitarian sphere and human rights, the education sector, and other issues of mutual interest.

While discussing the EU assistance to Tajikistan, a comprehensive exchange of opinions also took place on the implementation of the National Development Strategy of Tajikistan until 2030 and the EU Multi-annual Indicative Programme (MIP) for the period up to 2020.

The practical implementation of the new International Decade for Action "Water for Sustainable Development", 2018-2028 and the New EU Strategy on Central Asia was also mentioned as important for the region.

The officials also touched upon the joint fight against global threats and challenges as well as strengthening the protection of Tajikistan’s borders with Afghanistan. The parties agreed to continue cooperation on the BOMCA and CADAP programs.
