Meeting with State Councilor and Minister of National Defense of China General Wei Fenghe

The Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received the Chinese State Councilor and Minister of National Defense General Wei Fenghe who is in Tajikistan on an official visit.

The discussion focused on the entire spectrum of friendly relations and cooperation between Tajikistan and China within the framework of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

While expressing satisfaction over the positive process of developments of Tajik – Chinese ties, President Rahmon called the collaboration in the fields of defense and security sharing important areas of relations between the two neighboring countries.

He also stressed that the joint fight against terrorism, extremism, separatism, transnational crime, drug trafficking, cybercrime is important for ensuring the security of both nations.

They also covered a number of issues on the international and regional agenda.

Particular attention was paid to the political and military situation in Afghanistan and the prospects for its development. In this context, President Rahmon spoke with alarm about the critical development of the situation in this neighboring country, including in the regions bordering with Tajikistan, and informed the Minister of Defense about the measures taken by Tajikistan to strengthen the protection of the Tajik-Afghan border and its defense capabilities as a whole.

The officials stressed that the sharp deterioration of the military and political situation in the northern and northeastern regions of Afghanistan will lead to an increase in tensions, which will negatively affect the overall security situation in the region.

In this regard, close cooperation between the intelligence agencies of the two countries is necessary. They also stressed the importance of comprehensive assistance in advancing the peace negotiations in Afghanistan.
